The Biosphere Square was designed into a public space with an agora that invites the gathering of people and collaboration, highlighting two of the MUWBR’s major themes. The United Nations’and MUWBR’s flags fly proudly above and a granite plaque honouring the whole community was set up in the agora.

The granite plaque reads:
“The Biosphere Reserve celebrated its official entry in UNESCO’s international network of biosphere reserves on September 18, 2007.
This designation covers the territory from Pessamit to Baie-Trinité and from the St. Lawrence River to the Groulx Mountains (Uapishka). With this status, UNESCO recognizes the commitment of the whole community to create on this land a model region of sustainable development and dialogue.”

Combining urban planning and creativity, this development project earned Baie-Comeau the 2012 Prix Aménagement in the “between 20,000 and 100,000 inhabitants” category. To read the press article, please click here.
