The MUWBR is committed to the deployment of an integrated strategy for the enhancement and protection of the biosphere reserve’s hinterland. The purpose of this strategy is to provide a strong, coherent response to a number of issues: climate change, biodiversity decline, the unavoidable increase in recreational and tourism uses and relationships between peoples. It aims to continue international efforts expended to contribute to the achievement of the United Nations’ sustainable development goals.

Supported by 16 scientific organizations, Indigenous communities and national and international bodies, the strategy is based on the following five components:

  • Ecotourism
  • Research, acquisition and dissemination of scientific knowledge along with the promotion of Innu knowledge;
  • Environmental protection;
  • Education for sustainable lifestyles and citizen science;
  • Contemporary occupation of the territory by the Innu community of Pessamit and the socio-professional integration of the Innu.

Incidentally, the Research Requirements Guide was produced by the Uapishka Station in this context. The Guide provides guidelines for the development of a basic research and monitoring program in the Groulx Mountains (Uapishka) sector.
